Revisiting the Talwars- Aarushi case

There are many cues which one can guess from the Aarushi case. Some said, they are guilty some said they are not. Whatever be the personal opinion, the court has given it's verdict that the Talwar couple is guilty for their daughter Aarushi's murder.

Let us apply the knowledge of Non Verbal Communications and see what is correct and what is not. In an interview aired in 2011, Mr. Saeed Naqvi had an interview with  Talwar couple on Aarushi case.

The interview lasted for 25 mins, but during the 10 mins of the interview many things were visible. So, lets talk about the 10 mins of interview starting from the beginning.

Baselining

Baselining is an important procedure of lie detection ,where we note down the normal body language of a person to compare it with the nervous body language.

So, the baselining says Mr. Talwar is comfortable with cross hands, voice is low pitched and Mrs. Talwar has tilted her head slightly, nods to whatever is being said to acknowledge and has low voice tone.

Cue no. 1-  Convincing not Conveying

Generally a liar has a tendency to convince instead of conveying. We saw this when Mr. Naqvi asks Mr. Talwar, how come you didn't hear any noise? Are you both deep sleeper?  Mrs. Talwar says Probably....kind of....deep sleeper. I don't know , how we didn't hear anything. And then she does a weird nod which is kind of "whatever" nod that we use.
Now, Mr.Talwar also says," It's just that we didn't hear. it's just that we did not hear...." . The statement is more like convincing that they just didn't hear.

Cue no. 2 - Use of Hand gestures

Now, while baselining , we know that Mr. Talwar was sitting with crossed arms, but as soon as Mr. Naqvi tries to dig deeper, he uses his hands while talking. Here we see, slight deflection from the normal body language implying the question is making Mr. Talwar uncomfortable.

Cue no. 3 - Breaking of eye contact

Mrs. Talwar, in her normal body language makes eye contact even if Mr. Talwar speaks, but as soon as he starts talking about the events that happened that night, she breaks the eye contact and looks down. It might also be said, that she is sad, but we will get to that.

Cue no. 4- Nose rubbing & Face touching
As soon as Mr. Talwar explains the events, he rubs his nose and scratches the face. These kind of gestures are called manipulators. People use them when they have to put efforts to say which they don't want to.

Cue no. 5- Lip & Jaw movement

When Mr. Talwar explains the events, very quickly Mrs. Talwar moves the lips and jaw for a second. This is again a sign of impatience , symbolizing she wants to get over with this topic very quickly.
( This was not visible in picture, so we didn't include that)

Cue no. 6- Change in breathing patterns

If you watch the video , you can see the change in breathing patterns also. Mr. Talwar sometimes holds the breath and sometimes take longer breaths. Same goes with Mrs.Talwar. She holds the breath while the discussion goes on.

Cue no. 7- Response latency

Usually ,the response time for a question is anywhere between 2-4 seconds. If you see the delay or quick reply in the pattern , there is something going on, The liar typically takes very short time to respond, as he/she has prepared the lie and wants to get over with it quickly. When Mr.Naqvi asks the couple, what do you think happened? Mrs. Talwar, quickly uses fillers and then says we really don't like to talk about it. Her response time is less than a second, which means she has prepared the answer.

Cue no. 8 - The sigh of relief

Mrs.talwar takes a really long sigh when the topic changes from Aarushi event to their compounder Krishna, implying she is relieved when the topic was switched, again another red flag, that why is she relieved!

Cue no. 9 - Head Nod

Being asked about the argument with the compounder Krishna , Mr. Talwar says issue was some patient's work, but he shakes his head NO,implying subconsciously that whatever he is saying is not true at all. Head shaking adds up to a lot, because when we lie, our brain forgets to control the body movements.

Cue no. 10 - Cross arms

When Mr.Naqvi connects the compunder Krishna to the event , again we see change in the behavior pattern of Mrs. Talwar. She is seen crossed arms, which can mean she is feeling uncomfortable again, or is concealing something.

Cue no. 11-The absence of emotions

The absence of emotions also means something. When someone is talking about their dead child , they are supposed to show sadness, which is totally lacking in both of them. Also, they claimed they are innocent . If at all, they would have been innocent, they would have shown anger on CBI, Police, System etc, which was lacking too.

Therefore , the two prominent emotions Sadness & Anger were missing in the couple.
When we think, we are not speaking, we are letting something out even then. The power of Non Verbals is so much that we hardly have to listen to the person to know the truth .

P.S-  Here is the video of the interview, so that you can see the full video. The analysis is done from 0:00 - 10:00 of the video.
