The Longest Bollywood chain letter & the honesty

A few days ago, the news was trending on Facebook about the Longest Bollywood chain letter of Actors on Rajeev Masand show. So, we thought to have a look at the video and see the hidden feeling. Though there are actors here who are not being honest at all, but we will write about two points for each person.

a. Bipasha

When Tabu asks her about her fitness, the word "Amazing" brings smile to her face instantly. That is a genuine smile where we see, Bipasha giving a full smile.

When she talks about her fitness routine, she talks using her hand, which an illustrator here. This is a good sign, showing her interest in the topic.

b. Sonam

Sonam looks down and shakes her head NO during the question( where Bipasha asks her for hair, make up and dress tips for a red carpet event), which means, Sonam is thinking she can't answer that. Also, when she says, she thinks Bipasha looks naturally gorgeous she shakes her head NO.

Again while giving Bipasha some tips on beauty and make up she uses self soothing gesture, which means, making oneself understand, that everything is fine and I am right.

c. Deepika

When Deepika says Sonam is adorable and is extremely honest, she also caresses her hand and also touches the face, which means, she is not being confident enough for the statement.

When Deepika says," You speak your mind" and " We all move on" , she shows disgust . Disgust usually features on a face when we don't like something or someone.

d. Parineeti

Now, that's a true surprise with a genuine happiness on Parineeti's face , when Deepika asks about the dinner date. She is truly happy by that question.

When Parineeti says , " I'm dying to go out with you". She not only uses her hands to talk but also puts forth two palms in front of the camera. Palm show is a sign of honesty.

e. Katrina

We caught a quick micro-expression of Anger by Katrina, when Parineeti asks her the question. Now, what triggered the anger we don't know.

We saw her playing with her hair too while answering the question. Usually, girls play with their hair on two conditions, either they are preening or they are nervous. In this case, this could be a sign of discomfort.

f. Shraddha

When Shraddha hears the word "Who" she shows fear, implying she might get a hard question to answer.

Although she says, she can't pick a name, but she does shift her gaze to down with a smile and hesitates  to name "Aditya" (says a lot of things to us).

g. Priyanka

We see Priyanka pursing her lips, when Shraddha tells her foody. Pursing of lips symbolizes Priyanka doesn't deny it but chooses not to say about it.

We saw Priyanka giving a one sided shoulder shrug, when she says " Anyone can do that, it is just a state of mind" implying she doesn't believe what she just said. We see one sided shoulder shrug, when there is uncertainty.

h. Alia

Alia is being asked the square root of a number. She flashes a quick disgust after answering ( which is also a wrong answer, as Priyanka asks the square root of 2222, not the square) , which means she really hates it when someone asks her a question relayed to studies eg. GK, Maths etc.

The other emotion which we catch on Alia's face is Anger when she says " Yes, I don't know how to say the number correctly,so I'm using coma". This might look like a smile but it is anger being masked by a fake smile.

i. Anushka

One thing is very simple, if someone is saying he/she is happy, he/she should look happy. When Anushka says, she is happy, about the interview with Rajeev Masand. She doesn't look happy from any angle here.

This was the happiness we were talking about. When she mentions Alia, she seems happy, implying she is telling the truth.

j. Aishwarya

Aishwarya shakes her head NO in the middle of the question, when Anushka says who she thinks is the most beautiful woman in the world. Anushka also says, Aishwarya can't take her mother's name or any family member's name, which we think gives an idea to Aishwarya as to what to answer.

Touching of hair is seen again , while answering. Instead of a simple answer she generalizes, which is avoiding a truthful answer.

So, the longest chain letter of Bollywood did have something good, it told us about the hidden feelings , the true emotions , be it the question or the person who asked the question.

Here is the link to the video, in case you want to watch it.

Sometimes we hide our emotions to make things good, sometimes, to not disturb the existing system, but half truth is worse than a lie.
Keep that in mind and stay tuned.

Shweta Basu and the letter

The letter of Shweta Basu Prasad to the media has created a sensation and has become a top news.

Let us know little about Shweta. Shweta has started her career as a child artist. We have seen her in Kahani ghar ghar ki, where she played the character of Sneha, daughter of Om ( Kiran Karmarkar) and Parvati (Sakshi Tanwar). Later she acted in Makdee and Iqbal. Makdee got her national award. And the child star became popular. She has also done few south indian movies. She was recently caught, and was alleged of prostitution. She spent 59 days in Rescue home, and finally, the court dropped charges against her.

Let us find out, what she actually feels, is she happy with the popularity, as some say, or she is angry.

So, we went through few old videos of Shweta and found out few things to gauge her normal behaviour pattern.
a. She uses her hands a lot while talking, which is good.
b. Her voice is low pitched
c. She laughs genuinely

And then, we saw another video of her after the incident. The video is just of  2 mins, but it tells a lot about how Shweta actually feels after the incident. Few things, which are noticeable at first where, less use of hands, less or fake smiling , high pitched voice etc. Now, let's see what more, could we decode.

1. "Nothing happened"

She shows a micro expression of disgust, when she says "whatever happened was unpleasant" "Nothing happened". The two mins clip is full of disgust. Shweta might portray she is ok, but she really hates whatever happened.

2. Pacifying

She scratches herself when she says, "You can move out of anything", the gesture like scratching, caressing, etc means self soothing i.e she is calming herself down while saying that. She is not at all ok, how good she might seem,

3. Sympathy

And this is a micro-expression of sadness, when she mentions sympathy. She says, people are giving her too much sympathy and she is not a rape victim to have such sympathy. But again, hidden emotion here is sadness.

4. The preening

When she says, "whatever happened was very unpleasant" she preens, which means adjusting or playing with hair. Girls do preening in two cases, either they are impressing someone or they are uncomfortable. Of course, Shweta is not trying to impress here anyone. She really is uncomfortable about the incident.

5. The Industry

We also see a micro- expression of sadness, when she mentions about the industry. Although she says they have been always there but she is sad about that.

6. The anger

And at last, we see the anger, when she says I pity them. The micro expression of anger can be caught as nostril have flared. She is trying to mask it with a laugh.

And then gives a flat fake grin by saying, they don't know I have wings.

How do we know, it's fake? Because, she looks different in her real happiness.

Now, this is her real smile. We caught this smile, when she was naming the artists she worked with, while making the documentary. The real smile is more widening of lips, tightening of cheeks, narrowing of eyes, forming of wrinkles around eyes etc.

So, the anger towards the media is backed by great amount of sadness as well as disgust.

Please click here for the video link.

We can't control the mishap, but we can control , how we look towards the person after that. A mouth may tell us different things, but a face never lies and so does the body.

Rohtak Bravehearts and the truth

One day, Rohtak sisters were the hero of the nation and few days after, they were made shrewd girls to make the income through beating innocent boys. The Haryana govt. one day announces to give them bravery award and holds the same decision after few days.

The beaten up boys came forward and told a different story altogether about the girls, that they were asking for a scooty in exchange of returning of case. The girls say the boys are lying. So, it's not possible they all are saying the truth.

Let us analyse their body language and try to find out , who is telling the truth.

The Girls

1.Fidgeting

Unfortunately, we couldn't find the video, where we can see , clear fidgeting before the question is being asked about the second video. The upper body is calm and relaxed but the legs shows the restlessness. It may be said that they were anxious because of continuous media inference, but then they showed no such gestures or expressions for the media persons.

2. Lip Pursing

The younger sister was seen pursing her lips , when she mentions the lady who was pregnant. Lip pursing means withholding some information. Here, when she mentions the pregnant woman, she immediately purses her lips, suggesting that she is keeping some information about the woman.

3. Micro-expression-Happiness

We then saw her, flashing a micro-expression of happiness or a micro-smile while giving the statement , "they started touching us". A victim of physical or sexual assault is more likely to show anger, sadness or even shame while mentioning about the incident, which lacks here.

4. Defensiveness

In almost all the videos you can see these two sisters with folded hands. In this picture the hand of the younger sister is held inside the shawl, considering , it is winter, it might happen that she is feeling cold, but if you look at other videos, you could see the defensive posture.
Also, the elder sister is seen with open hands, but if you look closely you can see, she has kept a notebook on her lap.
We tend to keep something in front of us , to cover our chest or on the lap ,to cover our vital organs, when we are feeling vulnerable, which gives us a sense of security.

5. Eye-blocking

Eye blocking happens when people don't want to see the lie they are saying. When people squint, rub or shield their eyes, they are hearing or saying something they do not want to see or acknowledge. Sometimes, people close their eyes, it is like blinking but a longer version of that, while mentioning the sequences of event. This also raises doubt as this behaviour is not seen in the general behaviour pattern.

6. Generalisation
Generalization is again seen in-spite of expected answers, when question related to the second video was asked.

a.When the reporter asked, why the bad gestures or signalling of the boys was not captured in the video. The girl answered," these are my medals and certificates" which was not required and  is a generalisation.

b. Why it is only your video which is being released and captured? To which she answers," It's not rare to be teased by a man.", which is again a generalisation.

Generalisation is a technique used by the liar to avoid a flat lie.

7. Backing Off

When the older sister says , " My sister started beating them by belt to save me." She immediately retreats back, as if she is not the part of the message, she just said. Backing off is the cue, which lets us know, which part of the event, the person doesn't believe.

The Boy

1.Hands either folded or not visible

Hands are known as the trust indicators in the world of non verbal communications. We either see the guy's hands crossed or it is not visible at all, which is creating doubt. In the latter picture, you can see the hands are crossed over his vital organs, suggesting he is scared of what is going on here.
One can also think, it is the fear of not to be believed since he is innocent, but we will get to that.

2. Robot like & memorized speech

If you listen to the speech it sounds like robot, without any emotion and memorized. When the reporter asks the guy about the other friend, he mentions twice that the person boarded the bus with "Ghee", which strikes a doubt. Why would anyone remember if it is "Ghee" or "milk" or anything, when there are serious allegations.

3.Self soothing gesture

The guy is seen caressing his hand, when the reporter asks him if the girls demanded scooty or any money from them, and he says yes, but he doesn't remember it. The self soothing gesture, is to calm oneself down. It generally happens when we say something we don't believe or we want to make ourselves believe about the statement.

4. Blocking posture

The whole time, this guy was seen with a blocking posture. Look at his hand , how the hand is clutched to the other arm, symbolizing the defensive or blocking behaviour.

5. Micro-expression- Contempt

When the guy says ," Humari koi galti nahi thi ( It was not our mistake) ". He shows the micro-expression of contempt. Feeling contempt is either feeling superiority or feeling the others, inferior. In this case, it was a clear case of superiority, as the girls were annoyed and left the place.

6. Delightful

This snapshot was taken from the latest video ( 3 days ago), Here, you can see him, mentioning the same incident, but he is looking as if he knows the case is his favour. He can't control his smile.

The case was strangled more because both the parties are lying. None of them is saying the entire truth.

Half truth is harmful than a lie.

How supportive is Swiss Government on Black Money?

From months we have been hearing about the return of black money to India. Some claimed they have the list, some even circulated a false list of India account holders in Swiss Banks. But the truth is still under veil, if there are any chances of getting those money back.

Yesterday, i.e 3rd Dec 2014, We got the statement by Swiss Ambassador Linus Von Castelmur that India must show the proof of fraud. He also said,"  Yes, it (re-routing of black money) happened. But Swiss banks and others have been heavily fined recently, so the remedial process is in place.” “But you cannot say, give us all Indian account holders, this is not possible. You can’t just go on a fishing expedition. But if you have evidence, we will go ahead,” . ( Quoting from The Hindu )

Let us now analyse the statements and interview by applying Body Language techniques.

1. Baselining
The baselining is the procedure of measuring how someone acts when they are under
normal, non-threatening conditions through various body language cues. It is how someone looks when they are telling the truth.
This is the most important step . One step goes wrong and the whole detection is null and void.
After baselining we noticed Mr. Linus is a hand talker, meaning he uses his hands to elaborate when he is talking, which is an illustrator here.

He is also a leaner, when he talks while standing, he leans to his right or left from time to time. And his shoulders are relaxed. He gives a good pause of one sec while speaking, breathing pattern is normal .

Now let's see, what the Body Language tells us.

2. Controlled Hands

If you can see closely here and in the video as well, you can feel, as if he has controlled his hands. Hands are behind the back and are controlled. Do not confuse it with the standing army posture, which is not the case here, as the chest is not erected.

3. Stiff Body

The shoulders are very stiff here compared to what his general posture is,symbolizing there is something being talked here, which is making him cautious.

4. Response latency

Response latency is the duration between question is asked and the answer is given . In simple words, it is the time we take to answer a question. A good response latency is about 2 seconds i.e. if we wait for around 2 seconds after the question is being asked , that is considered truthful.

Mr. Linus however responds to the first question in less than one second, which is a matter of concern here.

5. Gestural slip

Usually, when we say positive sentences we nod our head top to bottom symbolizing "yes" and when we say negative sentences like I don't like it, I don't want that, I can't go there etc , we shake our head from right to left implying "No". If the statement is positive and the head shake is "NO" or the sentence is negative and Head nod is a "YES" , you should know that there is something going on. This is called a gestural slip.

When asked by the reporter if Switzerland has prepared any list of Indian account holders, Mr. Linus says Switzerland is working on case to case basis with Indian authorities. And during the full statement he is shaking his head "NO" symbolizing he does not agree with his own words.

6. Generalisation

Another concern here is the generalization. A truthful person generally doesn't use generalisation because he/she has nothing to hide, whereas a person who is lying will take the help of generalisations to avoid a flat lie. For example, if you ask someone did you ever cheat on your partner and you get answers like Cheating is sin or Who doesn't or Everyone is a cheater etc. You know there is something more.

Again the same statement When asked by the reporter if Switzerlnd has prepared any list of Indian account holders, Mr. Linus says Switzerland is working on case to case basis with Indian authorities.  We can see a clear generalization here, meaning, there is something which is being hidden from us or is still unknown.

7. Hand gestures return

This picture is from The Hindu from an exclusive interview with Mr.Linus where he is saying "The Swiss government will continue to withhold information on Swiss bank account holders, unless the Indian government shows “independent investigations of fraud” in each case,".
Look at the picture here, he is seen using the hands again while talking, suggesting his confidence in his words. Now that's the truth he is saying.

In case you want to see the video, click here.

Well, we will see with time, how it goes. Till then, keep looking.

Lie Detection & Sales

When we say Lie Detection, it doesn't mean catching a lie like a detective or a police. A lie is anything which is not giving you the result you want ( in this case, Sales) . For ex- The buyer tells you that he/she'll give you a call or your product/service is really nice or the product /service is overpriced . How would you know, if the buyer is telling you the truth or if the buyer is really interested and genuinely thinks the product/service is overpriced etc .
In this article, we will be focusing on the Sales part. Sales is the factor which makes or breaks the brand. Therefore, the people associated to it, should be dexterous enough to catch the cue spot on to save time, money and energy. One wrong move and one of the three is gone.
Imagine, you are a sales person, with many efforts you somehow managed to get an appointment with one of your prospective clients. Now the real challenge begins. How would you impress the person? Or how would you know if he/she is really interested!
You should know right from the beginning of the conversation , i.e is there a chance of positive conversion to the 15 mins conversation or not? There are a number of factors like base-lining, red flags, common gestures, facial expressions and micro expressions etc, which would let you know whether or not you should spend time with the buyer. Also, how to have a positive conversation, when you notice doubts across the table. Remember that, a person will not let you know the problem unless he/she is really interested. Generally, people avoid asking for clarification, to not entertain the salesperson.
Selling is easy, but selling to the right person, at the right time, with the right attitude, is not easy. And of course, the right product/service knowledge is important for the sales person.
So, whenever you get a chance to attend training session on Lie detection & Sales, don't miss it.
Stay tuned for more.

Is Janice Dickinson telling the truth about her & Bill Cosby?

One after one, many women have stood up against Bill Cosby, accusing him for sexual assault. The latest being former supermodel Janice Dickinson. She spoke exclusively to ET now on this topic.
Let us now analyze her body language and know if she is telling the truth.

1. General body language

She talks a lot with her hands. She uses a lot of illustrators when she is talking about normal things as noticed in other videos of her. Also, her shoulder relaxes when she is talking.

2. Stiff & Control hands

The first thing we noticed about her, when she was talking about the incident is , her hand movements completely stopped. You can also see , she is holding herself, which means , she is controlling herself. She does uses her hands to talk while explaining other events, which signifies, some of the events happened, but not all, as she is saying. Her stiff hands are seen in the sentences or part of sentences are  :
a. After dinner, in my room.....
b. I wasn't wearing my pajamas....
c. I had been sexually assaulted by this man ....
d. I remember a lot of pain....
e. biggest regrets and resentment ....
f. throughout the course of my life....

3. The Turtle

Her shoulders also look very tensed here. We call this pose the turtle. The person tries to acquire as low space as he/she could , which means low confidence. When you see Janice doing this, you know something is fishy and there is more to the story , that we don't know.

4. The distancing language

In speech, people distance themselves from their lie by not using pronouns or people’s names. They don't want to be associated with the lie they just said.
This is exactly what Janice does when she says , " I had been sexually assaulted by THIS man" .

5. The Smile

When the host asks Janice, why didn't she come up when it happened, she answers, "I was embarrassed and ashamed" and gives a smile. We expect anything here but a smile. A sexually assaulted woman , when talking about the event, is more likely to show sadness, anger, hatred even disgust, but not a smile.

6. Shaking head NO

The head shake is another important cue here. She shakes her head NO while mentioning about the incident. When the host asks her, if Bill knew about her being in rehab, she shakes her head as NO but says," He knew damn well, I was in rehab" which is contradicting her head nod.

And when the hosts says, what do you want to tell the other women who have been victimized by Bill Cosby? Janice says," I am here for you ladies" . And again with a head shake of NO which means, she doesn't believe what she is saying.

7. How dare you?

At last being asked by the host again that what will she say to Bill if he's at front now. Janice says How dare you, thrice. and gives a shrug,  which is again signifying she is not angry or sad at all.

Therefore, there's more to know in this story for sure.

Truth is good, Lie is bad, but half truth is worst.

Stay tuned for more...

Is Rene trying to woo Upen?

The aggressiveness of Rene is missing from few days. It seems she is trying to get close to Upen.
Let us figure it out, how so?

1. Concealed smile

On the weekend ka vaar ( Sunday, 3rd day for Rene), when Salman says Upen ," Aapne bahut achcha kaam kiya hai". We caught Rene smiling on the statement, glancing down. This smile was more of a pride smile, when we smile for someone we like. The down glance and smile implies hidden liking.

2. Generalisation

Not once, twice but thrice, Rene used generalization statements , when Salman asked her, if Upen was partial or not. We use generalization for a supposed yes/no answer when we don't want to lie. It was evident again that she wants to remain in good books with Upen.

3.  Fake Blushing

When she mentions Upen "was" her crush, she hides herself in cushion, faking that she is blushing. She hides the cushion and quickly removes it. A genuine blush lasts a little longer, because the person takes a little longer to come out the feeling.

4. Try to exchange glance

Rene tries to exchange glance when something funny happens, which is a typical teenager action. Usually teenagers do it, when they have crush upon someone. They try to exchange glance with the person they like .

5. Feet pointing

Out feet are one of the most powerful body parts for Non Verbals. We subconsciously point our feet towards the person whom we like . In the above picture, Rene is talking to Aarya, but her feet is pointing towards Upen, symbolizing while she is in conversation with Aarya , she is still thinking about Upen.

Again look at the direction of her feet. They are pointing towards Upen. She is really into him.

6. Angle of torso

If at all you can't see the pointing of legs, have a look at the torso. The torso, or the upper part of the body will be angled at the person we are interested in.

7. Lending a shoulder of support

This is Rene offering a hug to Upen, after Aarya went on Sunday. She knows Upen & Aarya were good friends and now she is trying to lend her shoulder to Upen.

8. I'll be close

Now this is very interesting, Rene's liking is upto a level, where she can't hide it. She goes wherever Upen goes. She sits wherever Upen sits.

Ohk, so we know, she is behaving like a typical teenager.
This is bit off the topic , but look at Upen's surprise, when he sees Diandra is feeding Gautam.
Ok, moving on.

She comes from a corner of the room, to calm Upen down , when Upen had an arguement with Ali.

The last one is funny. Just have a look at Upen & Rene.

Good or Bad? We don't know...but Upen is not into it yet. We'll know that, because before they speak, their body will.

Stay tuned for more.
